Las Vegas advertises the lowest room rates of any major US city and adds mandatory charges that can exceed the room. Three checks before booking do more than any deal site.

This is the sharpest weekday–weekend gap of any major US destination, and it is by far the largest lever available.
Sunday to Thursday is roughly a third of the weekend cost for the identical room.
Check two: the convention calendar
When a large trade show is in town, rates across the entire city can triple regardless of the day of the week. Major conventions fill tens of thousands of rooms.
The calendar is published. Checking it before choosing dates is the single highest-value five minutes of Vegas planning, and shifting by one week frequently halves the cost of the same trip.

The resort fee is mandatory, per night, and covers internet, gym and local calls whether used or not. Comparing advertised rates between hotels without it tells you very little.
Downtown, which is cheaper on all three counts
Fremont Street — downtown — has lower room rates, lower or absent resort fees, and several properties with free parking.
The atmosphere is different: older, denser, less polished, with the Fremont Street Experience canopy overhead. A fifteen-minute drive or bus ride from the Strip.
Off-Strip properties a few blocks east or west are the other option — much lower rates, often free parking, and a short ride in.
What is genuinely cheap in Vegas
The city subsidises rooms because it earns elsewhere, which makes several things cost less than they would in a comparable city.
The Strip itself is free to walk, and the fountains, the volcano, the conservatory and the casino interiors cost nothing. An evening walking the Strip is a genuinely good free night out.

Red Rock Canyon, twenty minutes west, with a scenic drive and hiking for a small vehicle entry fee. The best half-day in Vegas and almost nobody does it.
What is expensive
Rideshare during peak hours, bottled water on the Strip, pool clubs, and anything at a nightclub. Also the Strip's celebrity-chef restaurants, which price accordingly.
The summary
Check the convention calendar. Go Sunday to Thursday. Compare totals including resort fees rather than advertised rates. Consider downtown. Those four together typically halve the cost of the same trip, and none of them requires finding a deal.
